The feeling and climate
on our campus is one of pride and enthusiasm,
which is readily apparent as one walks through the
front gate. Students know that we are an
outstanding school in language arts and math
because of their high achievement compared to the
rest of the district. Students are expected to
engage in challenging work; therefore, students
and teachers take pride in their achievements and
have high expectations. Daily attendance is a
crucial part of academic achievement. At Alta
School we have meet our district attendance goal
of 95% for the past eight years.
The successful
School-wide Project at Alta centers on language
arts and math. A score of at least 600 and a
ranking of 10 for similar schools has been earned
each year since 1999. Our API for 2003 is 706. In
addition to our outstanding test scores in these
two areas, our school-wide project has improved
our instructional program in the following ways
over the past several years.
The staff has accelerated
the academic focus so all students are brought
into the educational mainstream and perform at
levels appropriate to their age group. Each year,
students are expected to test at grade level or
make a year's growth, which is a reform effort in
our district.
Intensive staff training
has included 16 full days of teacher training
leading to a supplementary authorization in
English as a Second Language, as well as workshops
in process writing, "hands-on" math and
science, and technology inservices. In
the fall of 2003 staff participated in a full day
of in-service for writing and the 6+1 traits.
Another full day of in-service in this area is
planned for spring 2004. A full time
reading recovery teacher works with at risk
students in the first grade. All
grade levels have broadened their instructional
scope by including technology-assisted
instruction, using classroom computers and
printers. The use of classroom tutors from the
local high school has enhanced instruction,
especially for our non-English speaking students.
Increased parent
involvement in the classroom during the
instructional day further reduces our
student/adult ratio. In
the 2002-2003 school year 2,326 hours of time were
volunteered at Alta.
For the seventh year in a row 100% of parents
attended parent conferences. This increased parental
involvement, establishment of high academic
standards, and integration of technology is in
complete alignment with both state and national
reform efforts.
The highly effective
school begins with the belief that all children
can learn, and what they learn depends on what the
adults in the school do. Alta teachers are
committed to daily, direct instruction of the
basic core curriculum, but concurrently, they also
employ innovative, challenging teaching, which
encourages higher-level thinking skills. There is
a well-defined and consistent discipline program
in place, which allows for student leadership and
freedom of choice. The staff has high academic
expectations for every student while offering a
supportive and nurturing environment where
children can realize their potential.
